CASE STUDIES

150-Tonne waste removal from abattoir balance tank

McBreen Enviro UK was commissioned to undertake the removal of waste material from a balance tank at a Midlands-based abattoir. The job required swift and efficient action, with a strict five-day deadline and the need to manage a substantial volume of material, all while maintaining high standards of safety.

Challenges:

• High waste volume: Approximately 150 tonnes of compacted waste to be cleared

• Performance target: A minimum of 30 tonnes to be removed per shift

• Confined space access: Required entry under CSE (Confined Space Entry) conditions

• Equipment coordination: Synchronised use of suction and jetting equipment to dislodge compacted material

• Tight schedule: Completion within five days necessitated long shifts and careful planning

Works Completed:

A three-man crew was deployed for the operation, across five days. To meet the removal target, the team used a DISAB

vacuum unit to extract the bulk of the waste, while a VanPack jetting unit with lance was employed to break up compacted sections. A support vehicle with 50 metres of hose ensured reach across the tank as needed.

Karl Creese, business development at McBreen Enviro UK said, “This project is a great example of how McBreen Enviro UK can respond quickly, work efficiently, and deliver on time - even when dealing with complex, high-volume waste removal. Our team’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and quality workmanship continues to set us apart.”

Once levels were lowered, confined space entry was safely undertaken to carry out internal cleaning of the tank’s walls and floor.

Not only was the removal target met, but

the tank was left in a clean and presentable condition.

Full confined space entry procedures were followed during internal cleaning, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.

As part of the wider scope of works, suction on the recycler was also used to assist with the emptying of an additional tank on site.

This project demonstrates McBreen Enviro UK’s ability to plan and deliver high-volume waste removal operations under tight deadlines.

Through expert coordination, the team exceeded performance targets, worked safely in challenging conditions, and left the site in excellent condition, highlighting our reliability and commitment to client satisfaction.
