Embedding effective digital tools

Matthew Hawkridge, Chief Technology Officer, Ovarro

While the technology to gather more and more data from water supply and distribution networks is becoming widely available, at Ovarro, we are seeing a clear trend – many utilities are finding themselves data-rich, information-poor, lacking the tools to bring that data together and look at the big picture. Data capture is only part of the story - its full power can only be realised by upskilling staff and embedding the correct tools to turn that data into useful information.

With Ofwat expecting companies in PR24 to “maximise their use of data and digitalisation to keep pace with the digital transformation of the wider economy”, a priority must be to embed the right systems to get the most value out of existing data. If companies can better use the data they already have, they will be able to manage their operations far more efficiently, without the expenditure of replacing legacy assets.

Ovarro has worked collaboratively with utilities to monitor their water and wastewater networks for more than 30 years.

These partnerships have led to the development game- changing technology, such as the award-winning Enigma3hyQ remote leak logger that is bringing significant improvements to leak detection rates globally.

Also reducing leakage is TorqueAssist, a digital tool that captures installation data from bluetooth-enabled torques, including gasket and bolt types, along with inputs on location and weather. Using a handheld device, technical operatives are asked a series of questions to guide them through the tightening process, providing instant, tangible records.

The captured data provides evidence of compliance, as well as key efficiency data to monitor the future needs of the infrastructure

An example on the wastewater side is BurstDetect, an early- warning technology developed in collaboration with UK utilities, in direct response to the urgent challenge to reduce pollutions. BurstDetect is a cloud-based artificial intelligence, machine learning tool that detects rising main bursts with potential to cause pollution incidents.

Through a dashboard, BurstDetect provides an overview of pumping station system status, historical events and site locations. If data suggests a potential burst, an alert is sent to key stakeholders within minutes of detection. This ensures utilities can take pre-emptive action, to prevent pollution events.

The system accepts data at a range of monitoring frequencies with algorithms being applied to understand and characterise
