THE MAGAZINE FOR THE DRAINAGE, WATER & WASTEWATER INDUSTRIES

TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY

technologies may be regarded as new, novel or innovative and, consequently, be labelled as ‘risky’. ISTT and its 28 affiliated national trenchless societies are striving to overcome this, and the new ISTT website resources are core to this.

So what has ISTT created to help you?

The ISTT’s revamped website is making all trenchless options available centre stage on its website and accessible with just a couple of clicks. Thats 50 years’ worth of proven technology innovations summarised on a single diagram. From the diagram there are onward links to a description of each technology, graphics illustrating many of the techniques, relevant literature for each technology and listings of companies that are able to provide each technology. On top of that, there is an online assistant to converse with.

Scope of trenchless technologies

‘Trenchless’ covers some 120+ technologies under three broad categories: - Investigation/assessment - Rehabilitation - New installation

The scope of each of these categories is highlighted in the box.

Scope of trenchless technologies The inspection/assessment’ trenchless technology category brings together, for convenience, two related areas of focus:

Condition assessment technologies that help determine the actual condition of a specific buried utility asset, and so determine what needs to be done to it. The technologies comprise:

• Visual/laser inspection techniques • Structural condition assessment • Operational performance assessment

Site inspection technologies identify the location where the utility asset in question is situated and other site factors that can affect the choice of solution and the conduct of the work. These

comprise: • Locating the exact position of the asset • Assessing the environment in which the asset is located.

Rehabilitation covers pipe replacement, renovation and repair.

Pipe replacement technologies fall into three groups: those that add a new pipe within the existing one; those that displace the existing pipe by bursting or splitting, but leaving the pieces in the ground around a new pipe, and technologies for removing the old pipe from the ground and inserting a new pipe through the vacated hole.

Renovation is divided into: inserted liners within the host pipe, and lining systems applied directly onto the inner surface of the pipe.

Repair is separated into structural and non-structural technology groups.

And the category includes a specific section on the rehabilitation of manholes.

New Installation covers a range of trenchless technologies that can be used to lay new utilities without excavation, including: horizontal directional drilling; pipe jacking; microtunnelling; pipe ramming, and; impact moling. The section includes, for completeness some, ‘allied techniques’ that reduce surface disturbance and are ‘less trench’ rather than trenchless.

By clicking on a technology, you pull up a detailed description of the technology and, in many cases, a diagram illustrating the technology. These diagrams are generic, so do not favour a particular product, and carry the ISTT’s logo on equipment and personnel included in the graphic (see the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) example).
