The grey market is the trade of a commodity through distribution channels that are unauthorised by the original manufacturer.

The grey market poses a growing problem to those operating legitimately in the professional beauty industry. Lack of education or desire for low cost is seeing many professional therapists purchasing fake beauty products from unofficial suppliers. This is not only having a detrimental effect on the sales of genuine products, but it is also damaging the industry. These fake products produce substandard results, contain unknown ingredients which may pose a risk to the client’s health, and in some cases the sales of such products are being used to fund serious crime.

Fakes are coming onto the market thick and fast, as well as cheaper alternatives that claim to be as good as the original. The problem with using eyelash products, or any beauty products, from a cheap or unknown alternative that you find somewhere in the mists of the internet, is that the products could pose serious health problems. These could cause damage to your client’s skin, permanent damage to their lashes, such as irritation, loss of lashes or worse! What if that fake product you have purchased was never made for the beauty industry and it is just someone trying to make money off of you? When you buy beauty products from well-known reputable companies, such as Lash Perfect, you have assurance that they comply with all EU specifications, which means they are safe. You can trust that the ingredients are of a high quality and are made for their intended purpose. Any claims the product makes is backed up with evidence and that is what your money is paying for – good quality products that do what they say!

Basically, cheap unofficial products come at the cost of the professional beauty industry’s reputation. To address this problem The Guild of Beauty Therapists have launched our ‘Genuine Beauty Campaign’, which will encourage beauty professionals to only purchase products and supplies for their beauty business from official brands, distributors and wholesalers.

You can follow the campaign on beautyguild.com and on our social media channels. Use the #GenuineBeauty to show your support.

Over the next few months we will be collating a directory on our website, beautyguild.com, of Genuine Professional Beauty Brands, Suppliers, Distributors and Wholesalers. Beauty professionals looking to buy products and supplies for their business will then be able to search this directory to ensure they are buying from a reputable source.

The Guild’s Genuine Beauty Campaign has received overwhelming support from those operating legitimately in the professional beauty industry. Below are some of the companies that have already signed up:
