North Devon Prospectus | VOCATIONAL STUDY PROGRAMMES

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION?

Vocational courses allow you to start on the right level for you, and enable you to progress as far as you want to. You can start at a Level 1 studying Functional Skills and progress onto university – and beyond.

The employability skills gained on vocational study programmes mean many students go straight to university, into employment or undertake apprenticeships.

HOW IS IT ASSESSED?

Your vocational study programme will have a mix of assessment methods.

All vocational courses are graded pass (P), merit (M), distinction (D) or distinction-star (D*). At Petroc, the average grade our vocational learners come away with is a Distinction. Each grade is awarded UCAS points to build up progression opportunities to Level 4 and university.

Two years of Level 3 study is needed for progression onto university and other Level 4 courses. You will be able to discuss progression routes at your interview.

SHOULD I CHOOSE A-LEVELS OR VOCATIONAL COURSES?

There is no right or wrong answer when choosing your study programme – it all depends on what suits you as a learner. If you get on best with more traditional styles of learning and prefer exam-based assessment, you may be better suited to A-levels. If you want to gain employability skills, hands-on experience and prefer a focus on coursework, vocational courses may be your best option.
