BARBADOS & BRITISH AIRWAYS ADVENTURE & ACTIVITIES

ADVENTURE OVERVIEW

Lennon Chandler, business development officer, BTMI

Many British visitors have come to our shores for a number of years – sometimes multiple times per year. As a result, Barbados has become somewhere they know well, and as travellers’ tastes turn to more experiential and adventure-focused holidays, it’s important that lesser-known activities get some of the spotlight.

Kite-surfing off the beach at Silver Sands, microlight tours over the St George valley, trekking through a gully as a troupe of monkeys scurry in the canopy above, horse-riding along Morgan Lewis Beach at dawn – these are all possible in Barbados for adventurous holidaymakers.

“While the dazzling sea is inviting, there are just as many adventures on land”

Or, hop onboard a 4x4 Jeep with Island Safari

Barbados for a guided on- and off-road tour. The action-packed tours are a fantastic option for customers who want to see more of the island without hiring a car, and can be easily combined with a catamaran sailing trip. Talking of action-packed, those keen to test their

physical limits can sign up for and time their trip with the Barbados Ninja Throwdown challenge, which is a gruelling yet enjoyable obstacle course.

UNWIND WITH NATURE For post-adventure relaxation, opportunities abound on Barbados. Book into one of the island’s naturopathic centres to sample traditional and holistic treatments. Try acupuncture, reflexology or reiki, or book a yoga class, which are available in many hotels and dedicated centres. Outdoor classes where yogis stretch in the warm Caribbean sunshine are immensely popular. To unwind even further, head to one of the

island’s luxurious day or destination spas. Whether customers opt for a dip in a nutrient-rich plunge pool, an indulgent massage, or a hot tub experience, soothing relaxation and a complete sense of inner calm await them.

Horse-riding on the east coast is definitely one of my favourite adventure activities in Barbados. I first experienced the thrill of cantering along the island’s rugged and unspoilt eastern shores on horseback as part of a birthday surprise and it has never left my memory.

Hiking is my other favourite adventure past-time in Barbados. The Barbados National Trust conducts some fantastic hikes throughout the year, which range from cliffhanging to stop-and-stare. When I was younger, my mother and I did a course along the south coast, which was surprisingly thrilling – think narrow, coastal cliff paths, wetlands and the ruins of the historic Harp Gun, one of Barbados’s hidden treasures.

Cycling is gaining momentum in Barbados. Around the Barbados Food and Rum Festival in 2018, I accompanied Michelin-starred British chef Tom Aikens on part of a cycle expedition with Bike Caribbean. The ride in itself was exhilarating, taking us across the south- eastern corner of the island through cane fields, past historic Gothic churches and down to sleepy fishing outposts.
