BARBADOS & BRITISH AIRWAYS ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

ENSURE YOUR BARBADOS-BOUND CLIENTS ARE CLUED UP ON THE FACTS AND FIGURES NEEDED WHEN VISITING THE ISLAND

GETTING THERE

British Airways offers 12 flights a week from Gatwick to Grantley Adams

International airport. The journey takes 8 hours and 30 minutes, with prices from £413pp*. Barbados is four hours behind GMT.

LOCAL LINGO

English is spoken everywhere on the island, but the fast-paced

Bajan dialect has its own phrases. One popular saying is “cheese on bread”, which is used for something impressive.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

No visa is required for travellers from the UK to enter Barbados. Visitors will require a full British citizen passport,

valid for the duration of their stay, and a valid return ticket. No vaccinations are required.

$ GETTING AROUND

Drivers require a visitor’s permit, which is valid for two months and is issued by rental firms or the Barbados Licensing Authority for US$5.

In Barbados cars drive on the leſt. Taxis are a safe way to travel but

don’t have meters, so make sure a fare is agreed before the journey.

For a cheaper option try the local buses – standard fares are BBD$3.50, so have coins ready.

WEATHER

Barbados enjoys an average daily high temperature of 30°C, and a pleasant breeze year-round.

The dry season is between December and May, offering slightly cooler

temperatures, less rain and lower humidity. The wet season from June to November boasts warmer days but a higher chance of rain.

The ocean has a warm average temperature of 26-29°C.

MONEY

The Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar at an exchange rate of US$1 = BBD$1.98. US dollars are widely accepted on the island.

A room levy is applicable at nearly all hotels. Collected in-resort, it starts at US$2.50 per room, per night, for a three-star hotel.

Restaurant prices vary, but for a

mid-range option expect to pay around US$33pp for three courses.

! LOCAL LAWS

It is illegal to smoke in public areas. It is illegal for anyone to wear or carry

anything with a camouflage pattern, as this is strictly used for the military.

18 BARBADOS & BRITISH AIRWAYS JULY 2019 FCO TRAVEL ADVICE The FCO states that most visits are

trouble free, but advises maintaining at least the same level of personal security awareness as you would in the UK.

DON’T FORGET

Tap water is safe to drink on the island. Standard plug types are two flat blades or flat blades with round grounding pin. Most hotels provide converters.
