SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE —

For such a small island, Barbados is brimming with endless opportunities to explore its natural environment both at sea and on land

T

here are more than 80 pristine beaches on Barbados, and these stunning aquatic playgrounds offer unlimited

ways to have fun. Visitors can head to Mullins Beach on the west coast for jet-skiing, or sample paddle-boarding at Pebbles Beach in the south-west of the island. They can head east to surf challenging Atlantic waves at the Soup Bowl, before wandering to the nearby Cattlewash beach, which is one of the longest on the island and perfect for a spot of beachcombing. Barbados’s crystal-clear waters are home to a

huge variety of marine species, and offer some of the best fishing experiences in the world, especially for deep-sea game fishing. Travellers can stop at the aptly named Fisherman’s Row in Bridgetown to charter a boat or find a guided fishing trip to lure out one of the local barracuda, yellowfin tuna or blue marlin. Captains will often share the ancient traditions of handline fishing.

UNDER THE SEA For clients who prefer to swim with Barbados’s aquatic residents, suggest a trip with Cool Runnings Catamaran Cruises. Choose from a daytime or sunset cruise, complete with unlimited drinks and a buffet meal, with stops to snorkel with turtles and visit a shipwreck. For another unique perspective on Barbados’s underwater world, suggest an expedition with Atlantis Submarines. Departing from Bridgetown, these underwater tours are popular with families, who can watch from viewing ports as they visit multiple shipwrecks, delve to the seabed and sail past colourful coral at depths of up to 45 metres. While the dazzling sea is always inviting, there

are just as many adventures to be had on land. Stop at Harrison’s Cave in St Thomas to explore rushing streams, glassy pools and impressive stalagmites in the vast limestone cave.

8 BARBADOS & BRITISH AIRWAYS JULY 2019 FAM FEEDBACK Vicky Farrell, Flight Centre

I really enjoyed the Cool Runnings sunset catamaran cruise around Carlisle Bay. We sailed on turquoise sea, danced to Caribbean music and ate delicious Bajan cuisine. My highlight was snorkelling with turtles.

I’d recommend Island Safari Barbados for both families and couples – it’s a lovely way to experience island life with the added thrill of travelling on a Jeep. It was an insightful way to see the island by road and learn a little bit on the way while having fun.

My top tip for adventurous travellers is to hire a car so they have the freedom to explore the island’s rolling hills, viewpoints and beaches for themselves in their own time. Plus, it’s leſt-hand drive like the UK.
