make a big payments acquisition, say Square? Apple ended its quarter with a ludicrous amount of cash, more, in fact, than the cash reserves of the UK and Canada combined. If the tech giant really wants to become a payments powerhouse, it should stump up some of that money, rather than building from scratch. Discuss.

Chris Gledhill, CEO and Co-founder of UK FinTech, Secco, has released another instalment of his FinTech Cool Wall. Bad news for blockchain which has lost its Sub-Zero status. “It turns out many startups doing blockchain were actually just kidding and the legacy bank participation in blockchain projects is really killing the buzz,” he says.

RPA (Robotic Process Automation) fares better; it is allowing some huge cost savings behind the scenes in large FS organisations and is rated a Pretty Cool tech (providing it’s not your job getting automated, of course!)

This issue we say farewell to our Senior Editor, Scott Thompson. Scott joined IBS Intelligence in February 2016 (having previously been Group Editor of banking technology title, FStech). On his watch, IBS Journal underwent a major redesign. Out went the front cover stories, replaced by a more modern take on the magazine’s contents. And in came a number of new sections, with an increased focus on FinTech, including Startup of the Month (which has proved to be particularly popular), The Big Interview, Who’s Been Saying What? and The Month in Numbers. Some of our rivals are ditching their printed editions, but here at IBS Intelligence the magazine continues to be a major part of who we are.

Digital is, of course, also massively important, so we strengthened the online offering, upping the number of daily news stories and adding various new features and functionality, as well as recently launching a mobile app. “It’s been an enjoyable experience and myself and the team have achieved a great deal over the past year and a half. I’m confident that IBS Journal and IBS Intelligence will continue to make great strides and I wish them all the best,” says Scott.

Millions of people do not trust fingerprint recognition, voice recognition and robo-advice, according to HSBC research. Insert astonished emoji face here, followed by smiling face with sunglasses emoji.
