Sumitomo Mitsui in chatty mood with AI initiative

umitomo Mitsui Financial Group has worked with NTT Communications to develop an AI chatbot with support from Accenture Japan. It is now available at SMBC Nikko Securities’ contact centre, answering questions over the Japanese messaging app, Line.

S

The centre began offering an operator-staffed chat service on its website in May 2016 and on Line in September 2016.

The aim is to make the bot accessible during nighttime hours and holidays, which are not currently covered by the chat service. It will initially provide guidance on ways to open accounts and initial public offerings, NISA, My Number, and Direct Course, with the service being expanded to include the likes of share price inquiries and investment trust selection.

Tandem promotes from within for CTO role

Paul Clark to the role of CTO. Previously VP Engineering, he replaces James Greenwood, who left the new entrant to join CLEARLY, a digital-only neo-bank based in Dubai.

Tandem recently cut 30 jobs, following a loss of investment from House of Fraser. The UK retailer, owned by Chinese Sanpower, was forced to pull funding after Chinese regulations cracked down on capital flight. In February the bank’s Chief Executive Peter Herbert stepped down to go into retirement. Co-Founder and Deputy Chief Executive Ricky Knox replaced him.

The venture, founded in 2014, has raised around £25 K challenger bank Tandem has promoted

million so far. Knox told IBS Journal in a 2016 interview that Tandem aimed to be “completely different” from other challengers on the market. “We’re different from Monzo because they’re API driven and will offer current accounts only. Atom Bank is saying ‘we’re going to be a mobile bank and mobile is enough.’ What we’re trying to be is a full- service bank … savings accounts, cards, current accounts, loans … We’re not saying ‘we want to be a bank’. We want to be a bank that combines natural banking with a service not unlike price comparison services. We want to work in tandem with the customer [hence the name].”
