WE DON’T NEED NO EDUCATION By Al Karosas, CVE

A college campus, by nature, is an institution of higher education that has teaching and learning components almost everywhere you look. Why shouldn’t my campus venue be included in these educational offerings?

The Bryce Jordan Center, on the campus of Penn State

University, can easily convert from a Big Ten Basketball game to a sold-out concert, like most of your arenas. One of our most important conversions, however, is into that of a hands- on place of learning where we teach the next generation of venue managers.

“The expert in anything was once a beginner.” – Helen Hayes

When you are in a profession for more than 20 years, you

would hope that you are educated at what you do, with some even maybe calling you an expert. A professional athlete would be considered a veteran, one who the younger players look up to and learn from – both the good and the bad habits!  better for your venue, or a trend that you just missed out on, there are always things that we can teach and learn from. How many times have you said to yourself or others, “If I only knew then what I know now?”

Today’s student wants more than just learning facts from a book or sitting through long lectures every day. They want to use their senses. They want to hear from industry leaders, see how standard practices are applied in the real world, and get hands-on experience. “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” – Albert Einstein Aside from theories and policies, each class starts with a

We try to make sure that the students get a real taste of what our business is like, while giving them a chance to network with some really smart, talented individuals who are leading our industry. Lectures, Skyping, and current events are likely common in many classrooms, but what sets this class aside from many others is the outreach component.
