Message from IITD’s President

Kevin Hannigan, IITD President and Head of Talent Consulting at hpc Global

Save the date – National L&D Conference – December 4th.

Hello and welcome to the latest issue of Training and Development.

The phrase “May you live in interesting times” has often been considered to be a Chinese curse, wishing the recipient of the curse to live in an age devoid of peace and tranquillity. While there is little evidence that this curse does in fact come from the Chinese, there is little doubt that we live in very interesting times. Brexit, digital disruption, trade wars and the undermining of democracy are all challenging us in ways that were inconceivable five years ago. There is little doubt that the pace of change continues to accelerate and that we need to consider how we support our organisations and clients through this.

Amidst all of this disruption, as an Institute, we are flexing to reflect the needs of our members and the changing nature of the sector. Over the years, we have expanded our services to our members to include a broader development offering, more networking and critically a greater perspective on Government policy and its impact of our sector. We will continue to expand these services over the coming year to ensure that we remain relevant to our members.

One of the ways in which we support our members and progress our agenda is our National Conference which runs again on

December 4th. As we are celebrating our 50th year this year, the theme of the Conference is The Future is Now and we have a fantastic line-up on international keynote speakers and business leaders to provide insights into where we have come from and where we may be going to.

This edition of T&D magazine looks at some of those issues in greater detail and reflects the changing nature of our industry and society. Noelle O Connor of the European Movement has penned a piece on how Brexit affects the L&D community and Laurence Knell focuses on Innovation and how best to prepare our organisations to innovate more effectively. There are also pieces on VR and Learning Technology Implementations. Amidst all of the focus on technology lies some key pieces on the importance of the human and human relationships in our working environments. There are pieces on Networking, a Coaching Culture and Peer Coaching.

I hope you enjoy this issue of the magazine and look forward to engaging with you in the coming months.
