RESPONDENT COMMENT Some people are just naturally innovative [Innovation training is] Not prioritised or valued, too ‘busy’ for this
As this is a developing industrial country, innovative training is very much in its infancy. At this stage the focus is on developing a culture of work commitment and industrial practices
I proceeded privately with innovation training to develop skills. SMEs would find it difficult to plan and execute such training, but it is really needed
As with the online survey, two key findings from the interviews were that:
• Innovation is seen as important, but many organisations are not sure what it is
• Innovation training is a poorly understood concept
Given this context, should we be surprised that so few organisations actually provide specific innovation training for their people? Probably not!

UNDERLYING ASSUMPTION
As innovation is an innate talent, training will not really help
The organisation needs innovation training, but it is far from a priority
Organisations in Ireland should have other priorities rather than innovation training
Even if it is necessary, innovation training is too difficult for SMEs
Consequently, for both organisations and their leaders, particularly those in L&D roles, this research should function both as a call to action and as a framework for productive next steps.
While it might seem complex and daunting, at its core the concept of innovation is actually quite simple – coming up with creative ideas and doing something with those ideas. What is difficult, however, is innovating successfully and this goes beyond just hiring the “best and the brightest”, but rather requires a more structured approach with appropriate training and development supports.
