TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Stephen Haymes, Director of

Engineering Skills Competitions who manages the WorldSkills UK Welding competition praised the high standard of talent on display this year. “One of the real highlights this year? The brilliant performance from our female welders, many of whom outshone their male counterparts. It’s great to see the industry becoming more diverse and inclusive.”

Women in Welding CATCH, a leading training and skills development facility supporting the process, engineering, and energy sectors across the Humber, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire regions, played a pivotal role in this year’s WorldSkills UK regional welding finals. Not only did the centre host two full days of competition, but it also fielded a strong team of apprentices— two of whom advanced to the national finals, including Abbie Duffield. Demonstrating its ongoing commitment

to diversity and inclusion in the industry, CATCH also hosted its second Women in Welding event in June. Building on the success of the inaugural session, this initiative is quickly becoming a regular

fixture, designed to inspire and empower female students to explore welding as a rewarding and accessible career path. The event was proudly sponsored by

Air Products, with Jemma McCafferty, an Applications Specialist and fully qualified welder, engaging with students. She shared her personal journey, offered insights into the industry, and spoke candidly about her experiences as a woman in engineering, helping to illuminate the diverse opportunities available in the field. Underpinning these fantastic initiatives

is the “Inspiring the Next Generation” campaign from Air Products, which focuses on building strong partnerships with colleges and educational institutions. As a leading industrial gas producer, Air Products offers an attractive support package for educational customers. This includes a range of classroom resources such as their comprehensive Welders’ Handbooks—ideal for students and apprentices—alongside other valuable teaching materials. In addition to educational content,

Air Products provides hands-on support through participation in Open Days, technical demonstrations, gas safety

courses, and equipment provision, helping to bring real-world industry experience into the classroom and inspire the next generation of welders.

Looking Ahead Welding is more than just a job—it’s a craft, a science, and a vital pillar of modern industry. By investing in education, embracing innovation, and championing diversity, we can ignite a new generation’s passion for welding. As more women enter the field, the industry grows stronger, more innovative, and more inclusive. The sparks of inspiration we strike today will forge a skilled, diverse workforce ready to shape the future of engineering and manufacturing.
