20TH MARCH 2023 THE GOOD LIFE DISTRIBUTED WITH Professor David Lloyd — surgeon to the stars
Keeping fit and playing sport is extremely important for our health and wellbeing. But occasionally, athletes at all levels can sustain an injury
Professor David Lloyd has been at the forefront of medicine and health for decades. He is well known for oper- ating on patients with gallstones and abdominal hernias and renowned for his extensive repertoire of
keyhole operations. However, he
also attracts many of our sporting stars, including Olympic athletes. He has gained world recognition for a unique operation that he devel- oped for athletes who sustained a
sportsman’s hernia or groin strain. His operation, known as Te Lloyd Release Procedure, is designed to return athletes to their sport within weeks. Many groin injuries are caused by ligament disruption. Te Lloyd Release Procedure releases the pain caused by tension in the groin ligaments while reinforcing the area making it stronger. About 5% of professional athletes will develop a hernia or groin strain in their career; most of them improve with physio- therapy and conservative treatment. Some athletes, however, require specialist surgery. Professor Lloyd, having lectured all around the world, now has an international following, attracting athletes from as far away as the US, Australia and Japan. He has operated on such rugby
legends as Shane Williams and Stuart Lancaster as well as hundreds of professional football players including Glen Murray, Peter Crouch, Michael Carrick and Scott McTom- inay from Manchester United. He has a strong affiliation with many Premier League football clubs and, of course, his local team Leicester City. Many of their top players have had a Lloyd Release Procedure, including Kasper Schmeichel and Marc Albrighton, but it was the operation on Jamie Vardy (pictured, with permission) which focused the minds of the sporting world. Jamie
had undergone some groin treat- ment by Professor Lloyd during his world-beating 11 goals in 11 succes- sive games in the first half of the 2015/6 season. Tis record has yet to be broken. However, in January 2016, his groin strain was so severe he had to seek further help from Professor Lloyd. Tere was no doubt that on this
occasion he needed to have the Lloyd Release Procedure — and he did remarkably well. Jamie was so keen to return to playing that he trained in the gym the
following day and actually played in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur in mid-Jan- uary, only days after surgery. His groin was successfully repaired, and he
to playing and scoring
returned goals.
It’s no surprise that Jamie and Leicester City Football
Club
went on to win the Premier League in 2016.
