Lions The king of the savannah is big on anyone’s bucket list. Even though — or most likely because — the big cat isn’t afraid to be a man-eater. Despite its impressive mane and stature, the male is habitually quite lazy. It’s the females who generally organise the hunting. Find them: On the Serengeti, Tanzania Lions are found all over Southern and East Africa, particularly in areas that are rich in game such as the Serengeti in Tanzania, famous for its wildebeest migration. The Serengeti Lion Research Project keeps tabs on about 330 lions in 24 prides in the Serengeti, 50-60 lions in five prides on the floor of Ngorongoro Crater, 150-200 lions in 10 prides in Tarangire, and 100 lions in 15 prides in the Selous Game Reserve, one of the world’s largest conservation areas, which also holds over half of the remaining endangered African wild dog population. The Selous covers an area as large as Alabama and offers a variety of ecosystems, including forest, savannah and wetlands.
