Asia’s numerous islands have much to offer travelers and each has played a role in attracting tourists in its own way — from party hotspots and dreamy honeymoon destinations to nature reserves and soft, sandy beaches. By Rashmi Narayan
HONEYMOON
Okinawa, Japan While the resorts of Bali and Thailand might be a more obvious choice for honeymooners, the islands of Okinawa Prefecture are an idyllic option for those looking for a romantic destination. Expect a host of five-star resorts, dazzling white-sand beaches, historic sites, untouched coral reefs and turquoise waters. There’s plenty to do here, from swimming and snorkeling to booking charters where one can spot sea turtles and even mysterious colossal rock formations underwater at Yonaguni Monument. There are also tours available to villages like Ogimi, which is known for having a higher than average number of centenarians. They’ll happily share their top tips for making it to triple figures (the slow island life helps, apparently). Alternatively, head to the vibrant city of Naha for a spot of ceramic shopping and intriguing historical sites. From here, explore the UNESCO-listed ruins from the Ryukyu Dynasty, which are dotted across the island. Be sure to take in the views of Nakagusuku Bay atop one of its many citadels.

ADVENTURE
Borneo Nowhere in Asia does adventure better than Borneo. Though many head here to spot orangutans, its majestic and diverse rainforest is also home to elusive Sunda clouded leopards, pygmy elephants, hornbills and long-nosed monkeys. Beyond impressive hikes such as those leading up to Mount Kinabalu,
where the distinctive whistling calls of local bird species like the black-crowned pitta can be heard, head to Gunung Mulu National Park, which welcomes visitors with striking geological caves and limestones columns. Many tour operators offer river cruises on the Kinabatangan, snorkeling expeditions in the coral reefs of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and cycling adventures.
