Finding balance in menopause

During perimenopause, many women describe themselves as feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and no longer like themselves

Hormonal changes can affect mood, memory, confidence and sleep, often at exactly the time women are juggling demanding careers, childcare and ageing parents. Making changes can feel impossible when there’s no time left for yourself. Flamingo Menopause Coaching

was founded on one simple belief: that every woman already has the power within her to find her balance. The coach’s role is simply to help her find it. The Balance Within programme

offers women a space to reconnect with themselves, to be listened to and to speak openly, without judgement, about how they’re really feeling. Led by a CPD-certified menopause

coach and trainer, the programme guides each woman through seven personalised one-to-one sessions. Together, coach and client explore mindset shifts, lifestyle changes and practical strategies, building an action plan for lasting improvement.

A cause of chronic chest pain – slipping rib syndrome

Consultant thoracic (chest) surgeon Mr Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos treats this under-recognised condition

Slipping rib syndrome (SRS), also known as painful rib syndrome, clicking rib syndrome and interchondral subluxation, is associated with hypermobility of the lower ribs. The affected rib can slip beneath the adjacent rib above, irritating or trapping the intercostal nerve and triggering the characteristic symptoms. The main clinical features include

persistent rib cage discomfort and sharp pain in the lower ribs, on one or both sides. Patients may also experience a burning sensation, clicking or abnormal rib movement, with pain radiating towards the front of the chest or around to the back. SRS may occur following a previous blunt rib cage injury, although in some patients it may be related to an anatomical variation or have no obvious cause. Given the non-specific

symptoms, variable location and frequent lack of findings on conventional imaging, patients may undergo several investigations and experience symptoms for

months before the correct diagnosis is established. Diagnosis is primarily clinical

and can be supported by dynamic ultrasound. Conservative treatment includes rest, analgesia, anti- inflammatory medication and avoiding exercise. If conservative measures fail, surgical treatment to stabilise the affected rib may provide a definitive solution for certain patients. Mr Nikolaos

Panagiotopoulos is a London-based consultant thoracic surgeon with a specialist interest in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery, as well as rib cage conditions, including slipping rib syndrome.

The other common problems

Professor Mundy deals with are the complications of trauma after road traffic accidents and after

surgery — typically after surgery to the prostate in men and injuries to the urinary tract in women having gynaecological procedures.
