The Galle Face Hotel COLOMBO, SRI LANKA

This 19th-century hotel is located on the edge of the Galle Face Green, Sri Lankan capital Colombo’s largest seaside promenade. The hotel is steeped in history, has a huge sea-facing swimming pool and an excellent fine-dining restaurant. The Galle Face Hotel is testimony to both

Sri Lanka’s colonial past and its independent present. Celebrated within the hospitality world, it blends historical splendour with crafted modernity to form a new model for heritage properties. International guests are immersed in the hotel’s rich traditions and compelling stories, while Colombo society perceives the hotel as the most prestigious, desirable destination in the city for memorable dining and special events. Celebrating 154 years, the Galle Face Hotel is

one of the landmarks in Asia and was acclaimed as one of the best heritage hotels in Sri Lanka in 2012. It’s also the first hotel in the country to be featured on a postage stamp. It recently celebrated two years since the renovation of the property. The 30-month restoration was the first of this scale in the hotel’s 154-year history.

The restoration project covered the North

Wing’s 72 rooms and suites, restaurants and bars, lobby, ballrooms and executive lounge. The wing’s rooms were completely reimagined for the 21st century. An ocean view executive lounge, The Long Room, which is more than 80ft long, was added for well-heeled patrons; and a new conservatory with towering arched doors now links the Grand Ballroom with the Jubilee Ballroom. Many sources point to the Galle Face as the

oldest hotel east of the Suez still in operation today. Its handwritten guest book includes a long list of heads of state and royalty, as well as popular figures such as actress Vivien Leigh and author Sir Arthur C Clarke. The food and beverage experiences are

exquisite; each of the restaurants offers a tasteful atmosphere. The Verandah restaurant has a great view of the ocean with sensational dishes made from Sri Lankan ingredients, along with seafood which is locally sourced. The 1864 Restaurant gives fine dining a twist of local flair using a variety of succulent meats and delectable desserts.

Don’t miss Every Tuesday and Thursday, the hotel’s historian brings stories of the past to life on a guided tour through its museum
