Why you shouldn’t ignore feeling faint or breathless


T


here are many reasons for feeling faint or out of breath. Importantly, heart-related


causes can lead to signifi cant morbidity and be potentially life threatening. Cardiac causes of feeling faint are usually heart rate or blood pressure related. Common causes are due to rhythm disturbances called arrhythmia, where the heart beats inappropriately too fast or too slow and can be associated with symptoms of palpitations and breathlessness. One of the common arrhythmias called atrial fi brillation (AF) has many triggers and risk factors, which unfortunately increase with age. AF is associated with a signifi cant increase stroke risk, which can be prevented if


diagnosed early. Faints or near black- outs can be caused by AF, as well as if the heart becomes too slow due to heart block. T ere are now many tech- nology advances


that can capture


these arrhythmias using smart watches or patch heart monitors, and there’s even an injectable micro monitor the size of a pen lid that can be implanted to monitor the heart for up to four years, allowing these rhythm disturbances to be picked up and diagnosed early. Dr Kare Tang is a consultant
