How is technology helping the fight against bladder cancer?

WHAT’S NARROW BAND IMAGING? Narrow Band Imaging is a technology that enhances the image we see when doing endoscopy. I use it during cystoscopy, which is an endoscopic inspection of the bladder.


WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT TO STANDARD CYSTOSCOPY? Standard cystoscopy shines white light into the bladder, just like using a miniature torch. A digital chip on


the end of the endoscope, similar to the imaging chips in a digital camera or smartphone, captures the image and displays it as a video on a large high definition monitor in real-time. A cystoscope with Narrow Band Imaging has this capability, but also enhances


the contrast of what I see. It there- fore helps me see subtle differences in the lining of the bladder to decide if they’re benign or suspicious and whether a biopsy is required.


HOW DOES IT WORK? Narrow Band Imaging filters white light into specific wavelengths of light. Instead of shining white light into the bladder, it shines rays of blue and green light.


Te blue light penetrates only


the superficial layers of the bladder lining and is absorbed by haemo- globin (a component of


the image by improving red blood


cells) in the fine capillary blood vessels in the bladder lining, turning them brown / black. Te green light penetrates deeper


and is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the deeper blood vessels, such as small veins, in the layer of tissue under the bladder lining, turning it green / blue. Tis enhances visualis- ation of the fine blood vessels within the bladder lining and improves the definition of any changes within the lining of the bladder. Instead of seeing pink / red changes


on a pink background, as you see with white light, you see black/ red


changes on a green / blue background with Narrow Band Imaging.


IS IT EASY IS IT TO USE? It’s very easy to use. You flick a button on the endoscope to turn it on and off so you can switch between Narrow Band Imaging and white light very quickly. You can, therefore, study an abnormality in the bladder under both white light and Narrow Band Imaging in real-time from multiple angles, and switch between the different types of light to help diagnosis.


WHO BENEFITS FROM IT? Anyone who needs a cystoscopy will benefit from their doctor using Narrow Band Imaging, as it enhances the image the doctor sees. Patients
