How proton beam therapy is changing the face of cancer care in Britain

35

T e past year has seen exciting developments in the ongoing fi ght against cancer in the UK. Much of this is thanks to the introduction of a new form of cancer care; high energy proton beam therapy

T is pioneering treatment targets cancerous cells with high precision protons without damaging surrounding healthy tissue, thereby dramatically reducing unwelcome side eff ects. 2018 saw the launch of the fi rst

dedicated high-energy proton beam therapy clinic in the UK, the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales in Newport, which treated a cancer patient with high-energy proton beam therapy for the very fi rst time on UK soil. Since then the centre has treated or is currently treating 25 patients with proton beam therapy and last month treated the fi rst patient commissioned by NHS Wales.

STATE-OF-THE-ART CANCER CARE T e company behind the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales, Proton Partners International, hopes to build a network of treatment centres within a 90-minute drive of 75% of the UK population by 2020. T is development in conjunction with two NHS centres coming online, will help the UK bridge the gap to other advanced European and North American countries when it comes to the provision of state-of- the-art cancer care. T e Rutherford Cancer Centres

feature the most advanced technolo- gies and Proton Partners International has formed a partnership with IBA (Ion Beam Applications), the world’s leading provider of proton beam therapy solutions, and Philips, a global leader in health technology. In addition to the Newport centre,

Proton Partners International has built two new centres that are fully operational; the Rutherford Cancer Centre North East in Northumberland

and the Rutherford Cancer Centre T ames Valley

in Reading. Both

centres will be opening their proton beam therapy suites to treat patients over the next few months while a fourth centre in Liverpool is currently under construction. Mike Moran, chief executive of

Proton Partners International, said: “We’re delighted with the progress we’ve made in a relatively short period of time. We’re a four-year-old company and we’ve already estab- lished ourselves as

the largest

provider of proton beam therapy in this country. We’ve set ourselves an ambitious goal to transform the provi- sion of cancer care in this country and deliver enhanced patient outcomes. “While proton therapy isn’t a

panacea for all types of cancer, we passionately

believe that cancer

patients in the UK should be fully cognisant of

beam therapy and just how eff ective it can be in the treatment of certain types of cancer.”

RAPID ACCESS FOR ALL More than one in three people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime in the UK, with more than 355,000 new cases of cancer every year and over 160,000 deaths from the disease. Of the 90,000 UK cancer patients treated with radical radiotherapy every year, Proton Part- ners

International believes around

10% of them — the fi gure accepted at European level — could be better treated with high-energy proton beam therapy. Proton Partners International

has forged powerful partnerships with key private providers to ensure

the merits of proton

WE PASSIONATELY BELIEVE THAT CANCER PATIENTS IN THE UK SHOULD BE FULLY COGNISANT OF THE MERITS OF PROTON BEAM THERAPY AND JUST HOW EFFECTIVE IT CAN BE

that patients who need proton beam therapy aren’t prevented from accessing it because of time or distance. T e Rutherford Cancer Centres have established an exclusive clinic at the Harley Street premises of Phoenix Hospital Group, which are complete with dedicated diagnostic and imaging equipment. T e facilities off er rapid access to initial consulta- tions or second opinions in the heart of London’s medical district and are designed to give patients seam- less access to the Rutherford Cancer Centres and diagnostic network.
