We all know how important it is to keep our teeth healthy as part of a good daily routine; Helen Warwick has been investigating how superfoods can help boost dental hygiene

ecent figures from Public Health England have revealed that a child in England has a rotten tooth removed in
hospital every 10 minutes — that’s around 141 children a day. Te NHS, meanwhile, has reported the number of hospital admissions for tooth decay for children aged five to nine has increased for the second consecutive year, making the oral problem the main reason for hospital admissions among children in this age group in England. In response, Professor Michael
Escudier, dean of the faculty of dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons, said: “When you consider that tooth decay is 90% preventable and NHS dental treatment is free for all under 18s, it’s disgraceful that so many children in their early years of school are spending time out of the classroom to have teeth removed.” It begs the question — how can
we improve our dental hygiene as a nation? Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, regular dental check-ups and shunning sugar-laden foods are all par the course to removing or
avoiding bacteria-breeding plaque. Conversely though, some foods can actually strengthen your teeth and gums — markedly improving your oral health for years to come. Here’s a rundown of the foods that can help keep your mouth in tip-top condition.
