71st ANNUAL TECHNICAL CONFERENCE HONOREES

The ICI Honors the Third Recipient of the Outstanding Volunteerism Award

by Joseph E. Fritz – Executive Director T

he Executive Director’s Award for Outstanding Volunteerism is one of the ICI’s highest recognitions.

Like the Innovator of the Year and Hall of Honor, there is no requirement the award be made annually. Unlike the balance of the ICI’s awards and recognitions, this honor does not involve the nomination process or committee review. This award is made at the sole discretion of the Executive Director. Naturally, I take this responsibility very seriously, and I seek suggestions from our Board of Directors, most of whom head our committees. Like myself, they have first-hand knowledge of our diverse base of volunteers, all of whom do a tremendous job. All of our volunteers

are very

dedicated, so I set the bar very high for making this award. Prior to this year’s Technical Conference, there were only two outstanding volunteers recognized, Russ Rosmait and Rick Alaniz. This year

I was absolutely delighted to identify and recognize a volunteer who has made an indelible mark on our association and our industry. The third Executive Director’s Award for Outstanding

Volunteerism was

presented to Donald Deptowicz, who was also named a Member Emeritus of the ICI at the same meeting. Selecting Don was a rather easy task.

For the past several years, he has expertly led our

Advanced Manufacturing

Subcommittee (formerly known as the Additive Manufacturing Subcommittee) which is part of our Technical Committee. During his tenure at the helm, Don has played a crucial role in establishing the Advanced Manufacturing for Investment Casting (AM4IC) symposium. Using last year’s event as a spring board, he kicked off our AM Webinar series addressing the use of advanced technologies in the industry. In addition to Don’s official role

with the ICI, he often avails himself to members and nonmembers alike to answer their questions about additive manufacturing and investment casting, often referring nonmembers to the ICI. He has been a tremendous resource to the ICI and the industry at large. A key thing about Don, is that “no” If someone

is not in his vocabulary.

needs assistance with a project, myself included, he tirelessly supports that individual, providing them with personal insights and referrals to published resources. He freely makes introductions to subject matter experts and is passionate about advancing technology.

It has been my privilege to work with him in service to our members, and it was an honor to recognize him for his ongoing dedication to the industry. Congratulations Don!
