Jim Dillavou


Director of Maintenance | SC Aviation, Inc The Swiss Colony is a family-


owned Wisconsin company that was founded by Ray Kubly in 1926. The company is America’s premier food gifts catalog company. Kubly purchased a two-passenger, single engine Cessna 140 in 1946. That was the start of Swiss Colony’s corporate fl ight department. Today, Swiss Colony’s SC Aviation (SCAviation. net) is a Janesville, WI-based corporate fl ight department, Part 135 charter operator and Part 145 repair station that serves customers from around the country. This month, we sat down with Jim Dillavou, SC Aviation’s director of maintenance, to learn about his story.

INTRODUCTION TO AVIATION Dillavou grew up in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, IL. When he was a sophomore in high school, his dad sat down and told him it was time to start thinking about what he wanted to do in life. Dillavou’s dad was a plumber, and his uncles worked construction. He was working on a career report for class on those two professions when he stumbled across aviation. “I got to thinking about it and talking to my family about it,” he says. “I didn’t realize it, but my grandfather was an aircraft mechanic on B-17s during WWII and my dad was an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force during Vietnam. I had never


thought of aircraft maintenance as a career path, but the more I looked into it, the more I felt it is was what I wanted to do.” Luckily for Dillavou, DAVIA


(DuPage Aero Vocational Education System), which taught automotive repair, machining and aviation maintenance to high school juniors and seniors, was in nearby DuPage, IL. Dillavou enrolled in DAVIA and started taking ½ day classes at the school when he was 15.


A&P SCHOOL After high school graduation, Dillavou joined the Air National Guard out of Chicago O’Hare. He
