My interview with Jim Dillavou for this month’s profile story got me thinking about teamwork. When I was talking to Dillavou, he stressed the importance of his team in SC Aviation’s success. I couldn’t agree more on the importance of teamwork! Aircraft maintenance relies heavily on teamwork. Successful mechanics seek the advice and help of their coworkers. They also help and mentor their peers at every opportunity. New mechanics rely heavily on their peers as they take the basic aircraft knowledge that they learned in A&P school and apply it to working on their specific aircraft. Their “license to learn” opens doors of opportunity in aircraft maintenance, but it’s their team members who hold the door open and help guide them along the way. Successful mechanics often find themselves promoted to management positions. Those that go on to be successful managers know that their success depends heavily on the strength of their team. They work hard to build a strong and cohesive team and foster a work culture that promotes teamwork throughout the facility. They understand that their role as a supervisor or manager is different than that of a mechanic. Even though they can do a job quicker than a new mechanic, they train that new mechanic and have patience as he or she learns and becomes more proficient. They have patience and understanding as they pass their knowledge on to those that follow in their footsteps. They are grooming the next generation of aircraft maintenance professionals. There are some that believe otherwise.


They unwisely think that their value to the company as an individual is more important than the value of the team. Although some of them may encounter some success, that success is often short-lived. Without the support and help of their peers and team members, they eventually face failure. Working as a lone wolf puts them in a difficult situation in the workplace and makes long-term success practically impossible.

approach the 11th anniversary of our launch issue, we understand the importance of teamwork. Our success would not be possible without teamwork. It starts by having a good team on our


staff. I work with a great team. We are all passionate about the aviation maintenance industry and enjoy doing whatever we can to give back to the industry that has given so much to us. We are thankful to all the DOM’s and maintenance managers over the years who have agreed to be interviewed for the magazine. We don’t do this to put them on a pedestal. Instead, our profiles give us an opportunity to learn from our peers. We can learn about their struggles and successes as they went from being a mechanic to being a maintenance manager. Everyone has a different story to tell, and we have learned from each and every one of them! We are also thankful for our team of


contributing writers who share their expertise and knowledge in the pages of D.O.M. magazine each month. Putting out 11 issues a year would be impossible without their help and support! We are also glad to have a great team of companies who support the magazine by marketing their products and services in each issue. We couldn’t do it without them.
