As you meander through the Siq, a mile-long rose-red sandstone gorge, you’ll feel like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft. Nothing quite prepares you for the moment you stumble upon the imposing 130ft-high Treasury, towering above those who gather to marvel at it. Its iconic facade appears on the front cover of almost every guide to Jordan, but nothing compares to seeing it in person. Prepare for lots of walking, as there’s plenty more to explore – from Nabataean palaces and Roman amphitheatres to ancient burial sites and ornately decorated caves.
