You know it’s peak season in Japan when the famed fluffy, candy floss-coloured blossom appears. Known locally as sakura, the arrival of cherry blossom is highly important in Japanese culture. Locals celebrate with hanami parties – gatherings held under the blossoming beauties to admire this perfectly pink sight. There’s thousands of sakura planted across Japan, but each bloom makes just a fleeting appearance so planning your visit is key. Blooms tend to appear in southerly regions of Japan first, gradually sweeping up the rest of the country.
