Globes shine ray of light in dark period A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Stricter border controls expected as Travel Weekly went to press will be yet another constraint for an industry in shackles, but it is the underlying commentary around the concept of travel itself that is perhaps most damaging to prospects of an imminent revival. As Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer made clear in a Travel Weekly webcast, the sector has been supportive of measures designed to protect public health if they are introduced with consistency and clarity and with acknowledgment of their impact (page 6). But suggestions from those in positions of influence that people should

effectively park their desire for future travel indefinitely are devastating for an industry that is reliant on forward business and confidence. Against this sobering backdrop, it was a joy to be able to offer the

trade brief respite with our Globe Travel Rewards event last week (page 10-13). The advance response to the event reflected the industry’s desire to remember and focus on

better times and find some light in a dark period. But watching almost 1,500 comments flood in on Facebook and other channels in the space of just over 90 minutes last Thursday evening, it was clear how much we all needed to be reminded of the incredible people, relationships and solidarity that are the hallmarks of our industry. The road ahead continues to be long and rocky, but if you need a boost in these tough times, I

urge you to head to tinyurl.com/globerewards and enjoy the evening of celebration, tributes and prize-giving which in the space of just four days had already garnered more than 10,000 views.
