Five days is one step forward for travel A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
The publication of the government’s ‘Test to Release’ strategy for England this week came as a relief for many in the trade, who hailed it as a vital first step towards the eventual removal of the crippling quarantine regime (page 5). The proposed day-five test system was largely welcomed by industry
leaders, with the inclusion of a key demand of home testing a bonus. However, as with so many messages from government throughout the pandemic, the devil is in the detail and the detail is still lacking. Confirmation of the types of test that will be permitted will be key to
understanding how realistic a five-day quarantine truly is, and much will depend on how the Foreign Office approaches its travel advice. There will also be widespread hope that market forces will quickly drive
down the cost of the tests themselves, which remain pretty eye-watering for an average family. Despite these unanswered questions, the announcement and more positive news on vaccines gave the industry a rare sense of forward momentum, with a late winter market and a positive Easter now looking more likely than they did just a few weeks ago. In these uncertain times, expert analysis of the outlook for the industry becomes even
more critical, so we are delighted to have renewed our partnership with Deloitte for the ninth consecutive year to produce the Travel Weekly Insight Annual Report next month. Turn to page 10 to find out more about this essential resource and our launch event – both of which are available free of charge to assist your business’s recovery.
