The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Quarantine: Five days is problem

Story: Quarantine set to be cut to five days by ‘test and release’ The cut to five days is a major problem. While UK tourists may well accept a five-day quarantine when returning from holiday, absolutely nobody will come to the UK on holiday if they have to spend the first five days in quarantine. The only solution that would be good news for the inbound and outbound tourism industry is a test-on-arrival/pre-departure requirement that then releases negative-testing travellers from any quarantine requirement. Danny Callaghan, chief executive, Lata

Contact details: I wouldn’t trust operators Comment: Contact details must be shared with operators I remember selling holidays with numerous operators, and at the end of the trip the tour leader would give all the customers a feedback form to fill in, with contact details. Often, customers would come back and tell us that they had received a communication from said operator that if they booked direct next time, they would get 10% off. So, unless operators could provide a cast-iron guarantee that this wouldn’t happen, I wouldn’t go down this route. Maz

Chris Wright @ChrisStosWright Sunvil Applying to the local council for a Local Restrictions Support Grant for Isleworth Travel. ‘Travel Agency’ isn’t listed as a business type. Maybe it’s time to rebrand as a ‘Sex Entertainment Venue’ – one of the many businesses that does feature!

John Hays: An amazing tribute

Tracey McAulay: More tears shed today for the amazing tribute you have [in Travel Weekly] to John. I’m extremely proud to be a part of the Hays Travel family. Tracey Luke: I love reading of John’s amazing achievements. RIP

Boris: What a brilliant summary, Derek Comment [by Derek Jones]: Treatment of travel agencies is nonsensical Kay Stevens: Brilliant summary of how the government clearly has no understanding of how the travel industry works.

@reubensretreat Our wonderful friends and amazing supporters @tcworldwide_hq @travelcounsellors had their first-ever virtual conference this weekend and we have to say, it looked fantastic! They held a raffle and silent auction for Reuben’s and raised a staggering £10,000! We are all blown away.

agents excluded? Story: Abta seeks clarification over high street agents’ non-essential status We have four shops and have been told by our local authority that travel agencies are not on the list and not entitled to lockdown grants. We’ve also been told that no one can go on holiday, including domestically. So we contacted our local council to say that if we’re ‘not retail’, we want to be changed to an office listing, which would cut our rates by two-thirds, and that we should get a rebate for eight years’ trading as a retail agent. Their reply? No. Boris, you can’t have this both ways. Darren Scofield
