TREAT YOUR TASTE BUDS TO A SPICY HOTPOT Named a Unesco City of Gastronomy in 2011, Chengdu is the perfect place for foodies. If you’re not averse to spicy cuisine, trying a Sichuan hotpot should be at the top of your list. A spicy broth is placed in the middle of the table, and restaurant-goers cook their own vegetables and meats in the boiling vat. The broth also contains peppercorns, giving your meal an extra kick. Hotpot restaurants, popular with the locals, can be found all over the city. Non-spicy broths are also available.
RELAX IN THE CITY’S PARKS For some time away from the buzz of the streets, head to the People’s Park, the largest green space in the city. There you’ll find locals practising martial arts, dancing and playing local instruments. Head to one of open-air teahouses, sip jasmine tea and observe the performances put on by entertainers. Also popular with locals is Wangjiang Park, between the Jinjiang River and Sichuan University. The park is located in the middle of a bamboo forest, and visitors can
stroll through its avenues, lined with 150 species of bamboo.
CHECK OUT THE LIVELY NIGHTLIFE Chengdu has a lively nightlife, popular among locals, students and expats. With an eclectic mix of bars, nightclubs and live music venues, the city has something for everyone after sunset. Head to Jiuyanqiao Bridge Bar Street on the river where a bustling bar scene sits side-by-side with an intimate live music scene. Or head over the river to Lan Kwai Fong, an entertainment complex popular among the
international crowd, for a diverse mix of restaurants, bars and clubs. Wherever you go, there are venues across the city catering to an array of music tastes including reggae, electronic dance and jazz.
