The ball is in the government’s court A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
The speed with which the coronavirus crisis develops is both shocking and devastating. Advice changes on an hourly basis, while decisions taken one day are obsolete and reviewed the next. Under this unbearably intense professional and personal pressure, the
travel industry has attempted to plot a course to support its customers, staff and businesses. Meanwhile, trade associations, consortia and industry groups have been lobbying in public and behind the scenes to source the practical backing their members and customers desperately need. As Travel Weekly went to press, Abta was pressing the government
hard on the contentious issue of refunds – and like all in the industry we hope a resolution can be found to secure the future of businesses and jobs while maintaining consumer confidence. The association also
succinctly summarised the industry’s case in its message to the prime minister late last week. If you haven’t done so, please visit
tinyurl.com/abtaletter and send the templated letter to your MP. Of course, the government’s priority is the safety of the nation. But it has also spoken at length about the future of the economy in the wake of the crisis, and without a functioning travel and aviation industry, that economic recovery will be far harder to achieve. We will continue to cover the crisis and offer as much support and advice as we can, so please follow us on social media and sign up to our weekly digital magazine and daily emails at
