Refunds: Clients need cash Story: Relief on refunds on the way

Kieran Wood: This is good for businesses but not necessarily the consumer. There are many people out there who will be depending on getting that refund in order to pay bills and put food on the table. I appreciate this wouldn’t be good for the travel industry, but at the moment it isn’t just the travel industry suffering.

The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Lobby: Write to your MP

Story: Abta tells Boris Johnson time is running out for UK travel businesses Massive congratulations to Abta and Travel Weekly for making it quick and easy to write to your MP asking for support for the travel industry, which is exactly what is needed. I have sent my letter in less than three minutes and urge others to follow suit. I understand many customers want cash refunds, but if this is allowed only customers with immediate departures will get anything, as it will send travel businesses bust. If we have mass collapses the Atol fund would not be able to cope. Steve Endacott

Balances: Hard choice

Story: Agents call on operators to delay balance due dates

Agents have found many customers who only paid a deposit to book are now refusing to pay the rest. The customer signed an agreement to pay even if they cancelled but if, as it appears, thousands refuse, how long, and how much bad publicity is the industry prepared to accept if tens of thousands of county court proceedings are issued to recover the outstanding amounts? Delaying final balances until there is a clear outcome is a real option but one that kills cashflow and increases the risk of the operator failing. We are truly in uncharted waters. Alan Bowen

Andy Freeth @Andy_Freeth If Only Let’s remind ourselves of the last holiday or fam trip we went on. Be good to flick through past pics and smile about the wonderful places we can revisit when we beat this! Here’s a nice Maldives shot to start us off! #holidaysnaps

Airlines: Held to ransom Story: Designer Travel boss appeals for help

from airlines and tour operators Sophie Ballantyne: Customers and agents are being held to ransom by the airlines, with some not even offering a refund when the flight is cancelled and others choosing to fly empty planes rather than cancel and refund. I’ve never known anything like this in my life.
