Story: Doubts cast over Virgin-led takeover of Flybe The suggestion is that Flybe’s directors kept the share price artificially high by failing to disclose the real depth of its troubles and hinting that there may have been more than one interested would-be buyer. Announcing a deal that valued the shares at less than a penny therefore came as a shock to those who expected the sale to be at a premium, not a 12-fold loss.

ALAN BOWEN Travel Weekly welcomes a response from Flybe

No-deal Brexit can pave way to ending EU flights

Story: Iata issues no-deal Brexit warning I want to see all UK-EU flights end completely from March next year onwards. Otherwise, we will be left permanently trapped under the vassalage of the EU with no hope of ever escaping its stifling rules. To this end, we need a no-deal Brexit.

QUOTE OF THE

WEEK

It’s little wonder Flybe’s deal came as a shock

Time to break up schools’ six-week holidays

Story: Plan for £1,000 term-time holiday fines could be illegal It’s time to rethink school holidays. Perhaps the solution is to stop the big six-week holiday in the summer, and spread out the same amount of holidays into two-week chunks. Hoteliers and other accommodation providers would then have to average out the rates, thereby reducing holiday costs and the number of unauthorised leave days. Spreading school holidays out would put less pressure on working mums and dads, reduce child boredom and petty crime, cut school heating costs in the winter, and improve education standards as there wouldn’t be such long gaps between terms.

Ryanair will look at holidays again

Story: Ryanair remains silent on closure of Ryanair Holidays Ryanair dipped its toe into the holiday market and quickly pulled its toe out because it found it too hot. Love it or loathe it, Ryanair is a very successful airline, but to become a tour operator is a whole new ball game with a lot more legal hoops to navigate. The closure of Ryanair Holidays may be a wise decision for now, but down the line I am sure they will look at it again. PATRICK DOYLE

Story: Ryanair issues profit warning It would help both profits and, more importantly, the environment if capacity were cut. Peppercorn fares should not be used to fill aircraft. The aircraft should simply not be flown. NOEL JOSEPHIDES
