Retention Future You Foundation targets £50k Phil Davies

A £50,000 crowdfunding campaign has been launched to support an initiative to address staff recruitment and retention challenges in the travel industry across the UK. The Future You Foundation

is seeking contributions from individuals until July 14 and is offering sponsorship opportunities to travel businesses. It has been developed as part of the ITT Future You scheme. Travel industry figures Claire

Steiner, Danny Waine and Paul Cowley will lead the Future You Foundation, which is targeting an initial £50,000 in seed funding. The money will help raise the profile of careers in travel

and amplify industry initiatives to attract talent into the sector. The foundation aims to foster

collaboration on challenges facing the industry, directly develop jobs and internships for graduates, apprentices and students, and create a global advisory board. It will also create an online talent

platform to showcase students and graduates actively looking for jobs within travel and tourism businesses, start a mentoring scheme and host industry masterclasses aimed at the next generation of travel industry professionals. Steiner said the initiative had

received a positive welcome after it was announced at last week’s ITT Conference in Istanbul, with 20% of the total pledged immediately after.

Take Off to make timely return amid recruitment crisis

Robin Searle

Travel Weekly is to bring back its prospectus-style publication and website Take Off in Travel as the industry continues to face major recruitment challenges. The 2022 edition of Take Off in

Travel will be produced in association with long-standing partner Abta and with the support of the Future You Foundation and will be launched at an event focusing on the challenges of recruitment, retention and development this autumn. Take Off was established as an

essential annual guide for students and young people prior to the pandemic, and will once again be packed with articles, information and case studies to showcase the vast array of opportunities on offer in travel and related fields. It is due to be published in

November and will be distributed to colleges and universities in print and digital format, with the website available as a free resource for the entire travel industry to use in promotions and recruitment activity. Travel brands will also have the chance to run showcase advertorials

to highlight their commitment to the development of staff from new starters through to management. Lucy Huxley, editor-in-chief of

Travel Weekly Group, said: “Take Off in Travel was created 10 years ago as we repeatedly heard of the need to showcase the travel industry as a compelling and rewarding career choice to young people. “The publication was inevitably

put on hold during the pandemic, but we are delighted to be able to bring it back with Abta’s continued support as we look to help the industry attract and retain its future workforce.”

We’re asking

the industry to work together to shout about the opportunities we offer

She added: “The Future You

Foundation is a collaborative industry initiative, bringing together the travel, tourism, hospitality and aviation industries to champion what a great sector this is to work in. “All parts of the sector are

struggling to attract, recruit and retain talent, so we’re asking the industry to get behind the Future You Foundation and to work together to shout about the opportunities that we offer.”

Waine added: “We’re immensely

proud of what we’ve achieved since launching Future You back in 2008. “There has been a lot of talk about

talent struggles lately and we have been working over the last 14 years to connect talent, education and industry. We now want to take that to the next level.” Travel Counsellors UK managing

director Kirsten Hughes said: “Now is the time to act. As our industry recovers from the past 24 months, we need to capitalise on the amazing talent available; be it school-leavers, graduates or those who, due to the pandemic and through no fault of their own, have struggled to find

suitable placements.” i To find out more and to donate, visit: tinyurl.com/futureyoufoundation

Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer

said: “Abta has long recognised the importance of attracting people to work in the fascinating and rewarding travel sector, and has supported Travel Weekly’s Take Off in Travel since it was first published in 2012. “It is the only career guide of its

kind for the travel industry in the UK and is even more important now as travel rebuilds after the pandemic, so Abta is very happy to be involved as one of the ways it helps its members
