irgin Atlantic’s travel recovery is “ahead of where we had planned for it to be”, according to the airline’s vice-president of global sales.

Speaking on a Travel Weekly webcast, Lee Haslett

said the rebound had been buoyed by the return of face-to-face meetings across the Atlantic, which has seen “strong demand”. The success has also been in part thanks to the

-Miami Grand Prix in May, and the launch of the carrier’s Austin route which, having made a strong start, will become a daily service in April 2023. “We’re delighted where we are and delighted with

the support that we’re getting from the travel trade to achieve that performance,” added Haslett. Speaking at a Travel Weekly Business Breakfast in

March, Haslett had said Virgin Atlantic was targeting its “best summer ever”, an ambition it still hopes to achieve. “We were talking about it being one of our best

summers, and it will be one of our best summers,” he said on the webcast. “If I look at July and August, it’s shaping up to be very,

very strong. Our load factors are above what we’d want them to be, and they’re only a few percentage points down on 2019.” He added that bookings that are set to depart soon were also looking strong.

“In the last 28 days, over a third of all new bookings

are being made for departures within 45 days,” he said. Haslett added that cruise sales to Miami and the

Caribbean were also popular. “We’re a strong operator into Orlando for the parks

and beyond,” he said. “But Miami is also selling really well. “Barbados is doing very well too, but another real star

is New York. We’re seeing a lot of customers wanting to go to New York for breaks. “And then, I’ve said this before, but I think it’s going to be a strong summer for Las Vegas.”
