We need a testing solution – and fast A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I wrote last week of the hopes of Travel Convention delegates that they would hear more from transport secretary Grant Shapps than the often-repeated reference to the government’s unprecedented support for businesses during this pandemic. Sadly, as Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer noted, many were left alarmed and some enraged by what appeared to be a continuing lack of understanding of the challenges facing the industry, and why many of those support measures are of limited or no practical use to travel companies whose businesses are effectively on ice (pages 4-5). Nobody would dispute that furlough was a lifesaver for many, but with the end of the scheme now just days away, the loss of many more jobs and much-loved brands like Toucan Travel (page 6) is now inevitable.

Despite the dismay over Shapps’ Abta speech, there was guarded optimism in some quarters

after his subsequent appearance at the Airlines 2050 conference and his insistence that the Global Travel Taskforce was “well-advanced” in its efforts to approve a testing framework (page 4). As many Travel Convention speakers acknowledged, the leisure industry is unlikely to see any

real upturn until next Easter at the earliest, and the focus until then is on the battle to survive. But with a testing regime an essential first step towards the meaningful return of both outbound and inbound travel, both sectors will be clinging to the hope that progress is swift enough to ensure that those who can make it through the winter are in a genuine position to rebuild come spring.
