Story: German MPs agree PTD ‘package’ loophole This is clearly not what was intended by the directive. Under the new rules any business can move its ‘place of establishment’ to Germany and seemingly we might have to accept them as selling legitimately in the UK. If we think a hung Parliament is confusing, just wait until the new directive takes effect. How anyone will be ready by July 1, 2018, remains to be seen; there will need to be a lot of changes to IT systems which simply cannot be done overnight. ALAN BOWEN

We back campaign to
stamp out this fraud Story: Support our campaign to fight fake illness claims If this is not stamped out quickly, it will put companies out of business, cost jobs and stop genuine claims being taken seriously. Great campaign – well done Travel Weekly!
ROSEANN RATTER, managing director, Holiday and Flight Centre, Hamilton
by about 25% in this same period. In 2017, our insurance premium is over 500% higher than it was three years ago. These costs have to be passed on in pricing as there is not the margin to absorb.
MATT STUART, managing director, Getabed
Everybody in travel needs to support this campaign, as it is affecting us all. That includes all independent agents – we need to stand together. Thank you to Travel Weekly for starting this campaign.

Fake claims scourge must be stopped
Story: Police issue warning to holidaymakers making false sickness claims This scourge must stop. Aside from legally capping fees that lawyers can claim, it needs arrests, convictions and prison sentences for those falsely claiming. Sad, but it will be the only way to stamp this out. If you stole thousands from a bank, you’d be facing a long custodial sentence. Yet guests seem to be able to defraud hotels and operators, without having to even produce proof of illness! COLIN PEGLER managing director, Resort Marketing International
Anyone who becomes ‘ill’ during a holiday should be required to lodge a complaint in resort. They should also submit to blood tests, and any other tests, the hotel deems appropriate to ensure real cases are compensated and false ones prosecuted. Anyone found guilty of making a false claim should face at least five years’ prison.
