Harry Goodman, ‘icon and true visionary’, dies at 79

The death of one of the “founding fathers” of the UK travel industry this week prompted a torrent of tributes and nostalgia from the many people he inspired.


Harry Goodman, who founded


Intasun parent International Leisure Group, died of a heart attack on Monday while on holiday in Tenerife. He was 79. Described as a “legend”, an


“icon”, a “true visionary”, and a “rule breaker”, Goodman is credited with pioneering the model for the modern travel industry. Manny Fontenla-Novoa, former Thomas Cook chief executive and chairman of Magic Rooms, said: “Harry was hugely charismatic and greatly regarded. He was a great


dealmaker and in many ways the father of modern tour operating.” Seamus Conlon, chief executive


of Cruise.co.uk, who worked with Goodman at TV Travel Shop, said he was the reason he got into travel.


“I saw him on the old BBC Two The Money Programme colourfully describing Intasun and Air Europe; I applied to join ILG straight after. “He was a true innovator, rule


breaker and lived life to the full.” Paula Lacey, commercial and membership director at Advantage Travel Partnership, who also worked for Goodman at TV Travel Shop, said: “Working with Harry was one of my favourite jobs ever. He was a massive character and a true visionary.” Terry Fisher, former chief
