WEEK

Bogus claimants should be banned
Story: Couple sentenced after false £50,000 sickness claim These people, and others found guilty of the same offence, should be banned from travelling. Perhaps the government could ban them from owning a passport based on the fact that they are proven criminals intent on abusing the system? And perhaps a substantial penalty should also apply to the legal firms that represent them – let’s face it, what solicitor is worth its salt if it fails to check social media posts when compiling a claim? After all, it’s the taxpayers’ money that finances the judicial system, so ultimately it’s costing every taxpayer. TREVOR DAVIS
Travel agents and travel insurance companies have the right not to accept a customer, so this couple should be blacklisted. If banned by the trade, they would have to sort out any future holidays on the internet themselves – hotel plus a flight, and have no protection for it. That would sort them out for ever. MARIANNA
BA’s fare types hard to identify on ops’ systems
Story: British Airways to bring in ‘Basic’ transatlantic fares This is fine, but on the tour operator systems I use it is hard to tell which fare it is, and then impossible to add a bag, so we end up having to call. I’m a leisure agent and don’t sell a lot of scheduled flights, so I don’t use Amadeus but book via Gold Medal, JTA, Jetset etc. We need better systems.

Cook’s branch manager roles are just a U-turn
Story: Thomas Cook to scrap cluster manager roles and create 360 store manager roles Thomas Cook’s Kathryn Darbandi says “by proposing these new roles”. I’m guessing these would be the same roles that existed very successfully a few years ago until Cook started experimenting?

CHANGE FOR CHANGE’S SAKE Travel Weekly welcomes a response from Cook
O’Leary stirs the pot with Brexit comment
Story: O’Leary threatens to ground aircraft and urges Brexit ‘rethink’ Keeping our skies open is imperative, and the opposite happening is unthinkable. O’Leary is an opportunist and loves to make these grand statements to stir the pot, but now and again, as in this case, he does put his finger on something. PAUL BONDSFIELD
The UK has voted to leave the EU, O’Leary! If you decide to ground some of your planes, better airlines will step in. NEIL BASNETT
