‘9 to 5’ operators should be praised, not rapped


Comment: Working nine to five, not a way to make a living I think [Miles Morgan’s] article is backwards. It is the people who work extended hours for minimum wage that should be looked after better, not expected to work later. If anything, these operators are looking after their employees and creating a better, more balanced working environment.

Qatar chief’s sexism should force change


Story: Qatar Airways boss apologises for gender comment His comments were deplorable and embarrassing, but I can’t see them destroying the Qatar Airways brand. I’m not excusing him – there’s no place for that attitude in the industry – but I think they speak more of a cultural dissonance. Let’s hope this blatant sexism forces some attitudinal change, though.

This is a Pyrrhic victory for those tour operators that have successfully lobbied for a ‘level playing field’. But the whole operator v OTA row is arguably now a sideshow. The greater threat comes from the accommodation-only giants like Booking.com and Airbnb. They will be the winners. KANE

New package rules are shamefully late


Story: Package Travel and Atol Regulations finally released OTAs previously playing at being a tour operator will now have much more liability – and that cannot simply be covered by insurance. It is a massive difference, good for the consumer, and about time too. I suspect operators agree and others might not. NICK COOPER
