Hurtigruten adds seven Alaska sailings in 2019-20

Phil Davies phil.davies@travelweekly.co.uk

Hurtigruten is to expand Alaska sailings in 2020 by deploying new hybrid-powered Roald Amundsen in the region.

The Norwegian expedition

cruise specialist will run a series of seven voyages combining the Inside Passage with off-the- beaten-path destinations, such as Petersburg, Mitkof Island. Hurtigruten, which is operating

its first Alaska itineraries in 2019, will introduce Roald Amundsen, the first hybrid-powered cruise ship into the area, the following year. The line’s expedition team of geologists, biologists, geographers, historians and activity guides will be on the 500-passenger vessel. The ship will conclude its 2020

Alaska season by navigating the North West Passage from Nome, via Greenland to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Prices start at £5,183 per person

for an 18-day Alaska and British Colombia – Inside Passage, Bears and Aleutian Islands itinerary departing on August 1, 2020. The Alaska cruises form part of

the company’s 2020-21 Explorer programme of more than 250 destinations and is the first season

“We have made it more of an appealing programme for the trade. It is more inclusive”

of hybrid-powered Fridtjof Nansen – sister ship to Roald Amundsen – which will sail to Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland and the Norwegian coast. The programme also includes

Russia and Franz Josef Land, Svalbard expeditions, cruises to the Caribbean, and several South and Central America voyages, including Mexico and Baja California.

ROALD AMUNDSEN: Ship will be first hybrid- powered vessel in Alaska

The 2020-21 programme will include gratuities, drinks with lunch and dinner, and, for the first time, one activity per day – ranging from city tours to hikes. Further excursions will attract a charge. Hurtigruten UK general manager Anthony Daniels said: “We have made it more of an appealing programme for the trade. We’re not marketing it as all-inclusive, but it is more inclusive. “We will see ports of call and places that aren’t offered by any other brands. “Our voyages in Alaska are more immersive, and we’re going to

places that big ships don’t go to.” hurtigruten.com

MSC unveils two new Cirque du Soleil shows on Bellissima in 2019

MSC Cruises has revealed two new Cirque du Soleil at Sea shows will be performed on MSC Bellissima. The shows, called ‘Syma: Sail

Beyond Imagination’ and’ Varelia: Love in Full Colour’, are the latest to come out of the five-year partnership between MSC Cruises and Cirque du Soleil. Both productions will be shown

in the 400-capacity Carousel Lounge on MSC Bellissima, which launches in March 2019. The Carousel Lounge has a 360-degree rotating stage allowing passengers to sit all the way round. Syma tells the story of a young sailor with a vivid imagination who braves different elements. Varelia puts a futuristic twist on

the traditional medieval tale of a courtship between a princess and

a blind man. msccruises.co.uk
