Karbo leaves Wendy


Wu after three years Wendy Wu Tours’ group chief executive Joe Karbo has left the business. He joined as chief executive in 2016 and then filled the additional role of acting managing director for the UK in 2017. In July 2018, he took up a one-year post as managing director in Australia. Ex-STA Travel boss Glen Mintrim was appointed managing director of the UK business last week.


Hughes follows Atkins


as chairman of Tipto Travel 2 and Gold Medal sales director Nick Hughes will become chairman of Tipto on September 1. He succeeds Shearings managing director Jane Atkins, chairman since 2016. Hughes brought dnata Travel brands Travel 2 and Gold Medal back into Tipto last year but has been involved with the supplier marketing organisation since 2000 through previous roles including at Attraction World, Affordable Car Hire


and Holiday Autos.

Disability champion We are Purple targets travel

A call to action has been issued to travel companies to support disabled clients and improve their service and sales through a public pledge. We Are Purple, a company set up


to drive more companies to service the needs of disabled people, is urging travel businesses, including agents and operators, to sign up to Purple Tuesday. Tis is a public pledge that


commits companies to taking action to improve their service for clients with accessibility needs over a 12-month period and includes taking part in an awareness day on Tuesday, November 12. Up to 7,000 firms are expected to sign up by November, and already most have pledged six or seven actions. Action could range from a website

Average travel salaries


‘rise by 4.6% to £27,690’ Average salaries for advertised travel job vacancies increased by 4.6%, to £27,690, in the first six months of 2019, according to a leading recruitment company. Salary growth for ‘standard travel jobs’ – those paying up to £40,000 – was less than for higher-paid jobs, rising by 1.5%, to £24,817, compared with the first six months of 2018. Barbara Kolosinska, director of C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment, added that the number of vacancies and jobseekers fell to 2016 levels.

Snowdonia Travel has opened its doors, offering in-shop, online and


phone booking services. Agency owner Darren Owen started the business in


Colwyn Bay, Wales, after being made redundant this year by Thomas Cook. He was encouraged to launch his own agency to provide jobs for former


colleagues who also faced redundancy. Snowdonia Travel is a managed service travel partner (MSTP) with Brilliant Travel, part of the Barrhead Travel


Group, and employs four consultants with more than 80 years’ collective experience. Owen is pictured with Snowdonia colleagues and Brilliant Travel director Linda Pyle (right).
