The best of your letters, comments and social media this week CAA: Why no accounts?

The CAA has acknowledged that the value of Atol-protected RCNs is a matter of public interest. However, six months on from when companies were first asked to report on these IOUs, none of us are any the wiser. Hopefully, the CAA and Treasury know just how many millions, or billions, taxpayers are underwriting – even if they won’t share it. As well as Atol renewals, March 31 also saw the end of the Air Travel Trust’s 2020-21 financial year. The eagerly awaited 2019-20 accounts, now a year out of date, remain unpublished. There is an irony that those who sit in judgement of the financial conduct of the industry can’t complete their own sums. Is the continued delay of the Atol consultation because the CAA are too busy with the above?

Toby Kelly, chief executive, Trailfinders Q Travel Weekly invites a response from the CAA

Advantage Travel Partnership @AdvantageHQ “We are seeing a surge in bookings and we want to best advise consumers. It’s all in the planning. We need this traffic light system to be as simple as possible to give us clarity.” says @KCookes (pictured) live on @SkyNews.

River sale: Rejoice!

Summer: Boom for staycations Story: Industry ‘disappointed’ by PM’s update Sadly, it looks like another summer of staycations, as the risk, uncertainty and high Covid rates of overseas travel deter people from booking abroad. Alan D’Ambrogio

Traffic lights: Changes are pain Story: Government confirms traffic light plan As Boris whizzes around in his convoy of blue lights, he may not have noticed that the thing about traffic lights is that they regularly change – and regular unpredictable changes are the very thing we cannot afford in this industry as we attempt to get up off our knees. Surely the right answer is a requirement for lateral flow tests on arrival for everybody and the use of quarantine purely for those who fail the tests until they get an all-clear from a PCR test? Paul Sawbridge

Andy Freeth @Andy_Freeth JG Travel Group Great news that we are on track for domestic hotels to open and group travel to commence as planned on May 17. Fingers crossed that next week there is more clarity for overseas travel. Was hoping for a little more today [PM’s April 5 update], but with everything looking positive, I remain hopeful.

Ryanair: O’Leary fails to discern

Story: Furious response after latest anti-travel agent tirade by Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary Peter Shaw: What this horrible man fails to address is why do people pay slightly more to travel agents? It’s because the public have no faith in the useless service they’d receive when booking direct with the airline with the worst reputation.
