MSC puts round-Britain cruises on flagship Virtuosa on sale
Phil Davies
MSC Cruises has put its UK sailings on board flagshipVirtuosa on sale. A series of three and four-night mini cruises from
Southampton, which include two days at sea, will start on May 20. From June 12, longer seven-night sailings will run
until mid-September, with additional embarkation ports in Southampton, Liverpool and Greenock and calls at Portland and Belfast. The 6,000-passenger ship will sail with 1,000 guests
for its first month and then at 80% capacity for the rest of the summer. The plans were revealed by the line’s UK & Ireland
managing director, Antonio Paradiso, on a Travel Weekly webcast ahead of the cruises going on sale on April 1. MSC is not insisting passengers are vaccinated, but non-vaccinated passengers must show proof of a
negative test taken within 72 hours of embarkation. All passengers must have Covid-specific travel insurance. As things stand, MSC Cruises will be the first line
to begin domestic sailings around the UK, although at least 12 other lines have announced plans to offer staycations at sea for Brits. MSC carried at least 50,000 passengers on cruises
in the Mediterranean last year with health and safety protocols in place. Paradiso said: “We’re looking forward to replicating the success we’ve had in the Med in Southampton.” Four-night British Isles sailings start at £499 and
seven-night sailings are priced from £849, including a drinks package and gratuities. New flagship Virtuosa features 10 restaurants and
21 bars, including two new speciality dining options, five swimming pools and a 112-metre promenade lined with bars and restaurants.
