Havila unveils astronomy talks on three northern lights cruises

Phil Davies

Experts are to join new astronomy-themed cruises organised by Havila Voyages. The three cruises, designed

to “deepen guests’ understanding of the universe”, depart in February, March and October 2024, and sail for 11 nights along Norway’s coast from Bergen to Kirkenes and back to Bergen. Former Royal Astronomical

Society president John Zarnecki will join the March 2 departure, while Ian Ridpath, editor of the Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy, will guide the February 1 and October 30 cruises.

The experts will conduct

lectures, with Zarnecki focusing on spacecraft and cosmic creatures, and Ridpath on stars, comets and the Apollo space missions. They will also offer hints and tips on spotting the northern lights and explain why they occur. Cruise-only prices start at

£1,058 based on two people sharing an inside cabin and on a full-board basis.

The lectures cost an additional

£250 per person and excursions are available for an extra fee. If the northern lights do not

appear during the cruises, Havila Voyages will give passengers a free six or seven-night cruise the following winter. Head of UK sales, Matthew

Valentine, said: “These astronomy cruises are ideal for customers who want to delve deeper into the world of astronomy, or perhaps those who are complete novices but who have a curious mind. “Our lecturers are fascinating

to listen to and I can’t wait to get them on board.” havilavoyages.com
