CAITLIN O’NEILL, Travelbag

“Visiting Shanghai was an unforgettable experience. It’s a city where tradition and modernity blend in the most exciting ways. Nothing encapsulates this more than wandering through the city and along the Bund, with its colonial-style buildings. The food was also a highlight. There was always an opportunity to try something new,

from local dishes – my favourite was red braised pork belly – to elegant restaurants offering world-class cuisine. Despite it being such a huge metropolis, there were peaceful pockets like Yu Garden, where you can take a break and enjoy some traditional architecture and culture.”

“I’ve been really impressed by how perfectly blended this cruise is. You still get that Royal Caribbean ‘hug’, with familiar branding and venues like the iFly and the WaveRider. But you also get that element of Chinese culture – at Hot Pot restaurant, you get to have an authentic Chinese hot pot experience, while at breakfast, I had bao buns alongside my bacon and eggs. Our itinerary visited Okinawa, so it was also interesting to see the two different cultures – Chinese and Japanese – together.”

“Shanghai was such a vibrant city and I felt safe there, so I could confidently recommend it to clients. The facilities on board Spectrum of the Seas were fantastic. There really was something for everyone, from the bumper cars and splash pads for kids to the skydiving simulator. Four days wasn’t enough time to see everything – I could have sailed for twice as long and never have been bored.”

JAMES BARKER, Iglu Cruise

“The North Star Bar has excellent views from the top of the ship above the pool deck. A great time to head up there is to enjoy some pre-dinner drinks at sunset. The bar staff are amazing and they can make up any drink you’d like – even if you want something customised. We went up there just as it got dark, and you could see out over the whole of the ship lit up at night – it was incredible.”

“It was my first time visiting both China and Japan and they felt like nowhere I’ve ever been before. The architecture was stunning, the streets were spotless, the people were so friendly and I felt safe the whole time. From the towering skyscrapers to peaceful temples and bustling markets, both Shanghai and Okinawa were so culturally rich and fascinating to explore. After looking through some of Spectrum of the Seas’ upcoming itineraries – including longer sailings that visit Mount Fuji, Tokyo and stay overnight in Osaka – I think it’s one of the best ways to explore Asia. You get to visit amazing destinations during the day but still return to the comfort of your ship each night.”
