CHINA UNCOVERED A group of 10 lucky travel agents set sail from Shanghai to explore East Asia by sea
China is known for its sprawling metropolises and cityscapes filled with skyscrapers – but it’s also the next growth area for the cruise market, as a group of agents discovered last month on an extra-special fam trip.
Royal Caribbean China teamed up with Travel Weekly to run a competition offering 10 lucky agents the chance to experience one of its China sailings.
The trip started with two action-packed days in the bustling city of Shanghai, before boarding Royal Caribbean’s Asia-based ship Spectrum of the Seas for a four-night cruise to Okinawa.
It was certainly a week to remember for the group of agents, who were keen to learn more about cruising in China. Read on to see what they thought of the experience and how to sell it to clients.
FAM TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
■ In Shanghai, agents enjoyed a guided tour to get under the skin of the city, visiting attractions such as the Yu Garden to admire its classical architecture and sculptures.
■ Few places deliver a better view of Shanghai than the 320-metre-high The Stage Magnolia Observation Deck, which the agents visited at sunset.
■ The group enjoyed VIP hospitality for the men’s final of the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament.
■ Agents had the chance to experience Shanghai’s global dining scene, savouring delicious French and Sichuan cuisine.
■ The four-night cruise on board Spectrum of the Seas, the Quantum
Class ship redesigned especially for East Asian sailings, afforded plenty of time to enjoy the ship’s facilities, including its soothing Solarium and assortment of eateries.
■ The cruise visited Okinawa – the smallest of Japan’s main islands – to enjoy a traditional Japanese lunch, accompanied by live music and dance.
