TRIPS

INSPIRED BY THE ODYSSEY

c

The summer blockbuster can help sell a Greece break, writes Alice Barnes-Brown

hristopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey has been inspiring travellers to book trips in the eastern Mediterranean,

whether to follow the tumultuous path of Odysseus’s return from the Trojan War, or simply to visit some of the standout filming locations brought to life on screen. In the week after The Odyssey’s UK release, easyJet

holidays reported an 18% spike in bookings across Greece, led by Corfu, which jumped by 28% week on week. Whether clients are looking to relax on the home turf of Homer’s hero or sail across the Aegean in search of adventure, these trips will satisfy their epic wanderlust.

CORFU

This Ionian hotspot is said to be the location of Phaeacia, where Odysseus rested before being sent home to Ithaca with a new ship. Homer described Phaeacia as an idyll, replete with palaces and fruit trees. Contemporary Corfu has many parallels, from the royal residences of the Achilleion Palace and Mon Repos to fragrant kumquat trees on its rolling hills. Grecotel Daphnila Bay offers a base to recuperate just like Odysseus, set beside a private beach with classical accents such as terracotta pottery and four-poster beds. In the spa, clients can

enjoy time-tested rituals to feel as welcome as the king of Ithaca did on his homecoming. Book it: EasyJet holidays offers seven nights’ all-inclusive at Grecotel Daphnila Bay from £892 per person, based on two sharing. Includes transfers and flights from Luton on October 15. easyjet.com/holidays

While Greece takes the starring role in the movie, scenes from the hero’s home isle of Ithaca were filmed in Sicily, and Audley Travel’s 12-night Inspired by The Odyssey private tour combines the two. Clients fly into Palermo and head to Taormina, founded in the 4th century BC. From here, there’s a boat trip to the Aeolian Islands, with a view of the sea stacks seen in the film. Then clients fly to Greece, encountering the gods of Homeric lore at the Acropolis and admiring artefacts at the Acropolis Museum. At the archaeological site of Mycenae, they’ll see the so-called Tomb of Agamemnon before the tour finishes in Corfu, where there’s

ample time to relax on blissful beaches. Book it: Audley Travel’s 12-night Inspired by The Odyssey costs from £9,560 per person, based on two sharing. Includes all flights, accommodation with breakfast, transfers and car hire, for travel in October 2027. audleytravel.com
